Grateful for not having needed to help kids with homework all those years.

We were out to dinner last night and the family seated behind us were trying to collectively complete the older daughter's algebra homework. It seemed stressful, but the dad was trying to make it better by ordering bottomless rootbeer floats and fries (which I thought was so nice). Still, I looked at my husband and said "November gratitude: no homework!"

Commonplace, everyday things

I got to see both of those things. Both photos are by me. I love modern cameras.

The first was in Scotland, in 2013. The second was in New Mexico, in 2019. Those cows are not normal (in my personal experience), but the other is a plain-old view. Both sorts of conditions are there, for some people, every day, and have been for centuries.

Seeing with those thoughts in mind can help with gratitude and abundance. Think of people from other places who have never seen the plants or trees or animals you can easily see on an everyday day.

I hope you see beauty today.

P.S. It can also be fun to imagine having time-traveling relatives visit and see your house and collections and gadgets. People from a hundred years ago would be as interested as people from the future. Appreciate your stuff!

Balancing on changes

Expressing joy

Gratitude is good for the soul, for the spirit, for the mind, for the heart.

Negativity and discouragement spiral down a hole.

...When you hear or read something pure and joyful, maybe just bask in it, or add to it. Please try to think and make a choice, though, about whether to respond or to be quietly grateful that someone is courageous enough to express joy in a dangerously negative world.

Automotive peace

Me, from a gratitude discussion in 2016:

Years back when I had three kids who ate in the van and cup holders would have ketchup in them and stuff, I dreamed of growing up and getting a nice Buick sedan when the kids were grown.

The other day Keith and I saw a nice Buick sedan. I said that was supposed to be my car someday, and Keith said still could be. But I think after this used minivan dies, I need to get another used minivan. And if pressed to choose a nice sedan right now, it would likely be a Hyundai Sonata.

I had not factored in grandchildren, or needing to take six people to a play or out to dinner.

I think I would rather clean ketchup out of drink holders and have people smiling and laughing in my used minivan than to have a quiet, soft luxury car I would need to fill with "no" and "don't."

I had parallel-parked that van on a one-way circuit around the plaza. I parked in a tight spot, on the left side, and was proud. A man sitting on the bench gave me a thumbs-up for the smooth parking. When we came back, the other cars were gone so it didn't look impressive anymore.Chrysler "Town & Country" mini-van; nice auto.

You don't "have to"

Every time "have to" comes up in writing, speech or thought, back up two words and see it as a choice, and not a have to.

You don't "have to" do that, but your ability to make choices and to live a life of abundant gratitude will be hampered if you don't.

Positive, inspired, happy

What you have

The difference between poverty and abundance is sometimes the ability to see what one has. There have been times when I didn't have a car, we had a leaky roof, and the washing machine wasn't working. There have been more times that the car and washing machine were functioning, the house was solid, and I forgot to appreciate it.
