Real life science
While I'm a big fan of science and have a sciency degree, in terms of helping children I trust the real life experiences of unschoolers far more than I trust scientific studies done on (schooled) children (often with an eye towards getting kids to perform better in school!)
Offering a fear over experience as the basis of decision making isn't going to be helpful to unschooling.

Open to change
It's kind of schoolish, the idea that the more one reads the more one knows. Unschooling is one of those things that isn't accomplished by recitation or test-taking, but only by changing thoughts and actions, beliefs and relationships. It's not easy, it's not quick, and it's not for everyone.

When the world is new
Adults, if they're lucky, can also acknowledge the chance for learning and joy when they see something for the first time. A sense of wonder comes easily for toddlers, but it can be yours, too, with a little practice.

Recovering
There were days not long ago when we did things that now seem problematical. Running in a bubble another kid would run in next. Hugging and kissing people in public. Crowding, laughing, into shared vehicles or public transportation to go and ride and climb and slide and explore.
I've lived past and through things that seemed terrible, but I knew my parents and grandparents had seen worse. In each and every case, the world went back to normal, and sometimes better, in one way or another, or in many ways.
Things can seem grim and limiting, but somehow, it will rain and shine and plants and trees will grow, and children will run and play in more and different places.
I'm impressed with every family staying home with children, when it's hard to do. I salute you. I hope you can live it one more day, and then again, in sweet, creative ways.
Make happy memories, however you can.

What if?
What if.... you dig a hole in your back yard? What if you leave laundry in the washing machine? What if you think dangerous thoughts?
What if you keep your child home from school for one year?
What if you keep him home longer?
What if you create such a rich life that not only is your child learning, but so are the parents? So are visitors to your house?
What if you click the link below, and read more about all of that?

Avoid struggles
"Struggling with a disorder" is not as good as living with choices and looking up instead of down. Find ways to relax, rather than to struggle. |
